Is A Junkyard LS Engine Worth It?

  1. Shane Whalley: Detroit area. But all over the Midwest $400 is a pretty average price. Also check car-part.com
  2. Paul Schmidt: His own words the thing has no power, yay LS!!!!
  3. Aa Bb: i like that its in a stang im working on a 65 with swap plans
  4. Tim Martin: +mewrongway the yote will rev 8k+ all day everyday.
  5. konard konrado: thank you +Shane Whalley
  6. Raymond Butterfield: You’re story sounds so fake
  7. Mark Durl: id prefer a hemi or a ford modular engine, i have found that both are extremely durable. plus i have driven cars with an LS and they just never seem to measure up. i know the LS is relatively cheap horsepower, but sometimes its better to pay for a quality motor.
  8. Donovan Creamer: 280hp on 8#?!? LoL it would have made more power n/a with a GOOD tune.
  9. Paul Forester: I knew there would mud slinging comments here, but I'll comment anyway. I love the LS engine. So what!? The main reason I commented is I like the video and how you presented your points on the LS.
  10. Shane Whalley: LS is a base series of the engine family. LM7, LQ9, LM4, ect are all based on the LS platform just with a different engine code. That’s like saying a RHS tall deck, a dart block, or even a billet aluminum LS based engine isn’t a LS engine even though it uses ALL LS BASED parts on it. You can call it whatever you want but it’s based on an LS and doesn’t change the fact that it’s the same thing.
  11. Shane Whalley: The junkyard by my house is $250 for any engine with accessories.
  12. Kyle Gilbert: The internet needs to talk mega shit about the LS platform. Only reason they cost so much is because ppl know ppl really want then and jack the prices up
  13. Mitchell: Get the 5.3s at the junkyard around here for around 150-200 if you pull it yourself :D
  14. Scott Steward: I have a LA 5.3 out of a old man's truck. That was totaled at 130m. Hit in the side. Bought it to build another street rod. I truly have more projects than I can finish. I will sell it 750$ no negotiating that's it.
  15. Shane Whalley: Look up the differences between static compression and effective compression. An engine with low static compression at say 15lbs Of boost will have the same effective compression as a higher compression engine at lower boost levels. With the right fuel type and timing it’s not an issue. We never had an issue due to static compression, but due to cylinder overbore size on an aluminum block.
  16. Robert Mottram: I go to U Pull It's junkyards all the time... Might find a Honda B16 B18 for that price,,, maybe... ANY V8 is $600.00 + if you are lucky. An LS... No friggin way $400.00.... I wish...
  17. Gregory Vaughn: Totally worth it.
  18. allan b: Do you do a compression test before you buy a junk yard engine?
  19. super20dan: my LS 5.3 never ceases to amaze me. will go down as one of the all time great engines ever. only street race its lost is to a cobra mustang. gt
  20. Shane Whalley: Lol dude. It was a junkyard 5.3 engine with 180kmiles on it running on a LS2 PCM with no cam or knock signal. Chill
  21. ChefGiovanni: Is A Junkyard LS Engine Worth It? Dude, cool video, but anyone with a brain knows it is a crap shoot. Like going to the casino.
  22. Jeff Burnette: In md ls engines start at 1000 to 1500 for just the engine
  23. Shane Whalley: I wouldn’t recommend revving over 6800. That’s where we usually set our limiter.
  24. mewrongway: Because unlike the yote, You can!!
  25. Vincent Bailey: i understand that part just cracked me up because we knew what was coming after that haha
  26. Shane Whalley: Also if you’re only making 600 on a tt5.7 you’re fuckin up. That same 5.3 make over 800whp once it got dialed in and wired to run correctly on the LS2 pcm.
  27. Shane Whalley: If you can find a complete kit with pump radiator belt, pulley, accessories ect. for the right price, it’s a great setup. We have a ctsV at our shop making over 800whp on E85 with that blower. All said and done you may be better off going with a whipple setup depending on the power you want to make. Don’t forget you’ll need to upgrade the fuel system. I’d recommend deleting the PWM fuel pump, dropping in a Walbro 450lph, 1000cc injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and running a return line to the tank for the fuel system.
  28. mewrongway: OMG
  29. Drag Car Builder: If you have a wife that will help ya too ya gotta keeper I am sure you know that brother good luck with the build I hope us keep us up to date!!
  30. James W. Barrett: you put a turbo on a 11.5-1  engine?????????????????????????    Hmmmmmm....
  31. flubyux2: Too much talking. Not enough fab
  32. jacob bouck: what junkyard do you go to for 400$
  33. Patrick Cannon: SC get them for that or cheaper
  34. Bradley Carrier: Junk yards in the Cincinnati area charge a flat rate for any V8s. 4.8 to 6.2 LS go for $225-$300 with super low cores.
  35. Tiaan Wolmarans: Dude. Junkyard is always better. Crate engine, for me at least, would cost $8000. Just rebuilt the top end, cleaned up the block, crank, and rods, replaced the pistons and valvetrain for under 6k.... that a win any day. You can spend the 2 grand you saved on another engine
  36. wayne thomas: I get the deal that this specifically about LS's and why the question was framed so specifically. I think the same is true very commonly though, it ALWAYS depends on your expectations of the results. I'm a mopar guy and I can take a 45 year old 440 block, spend weeks of time and gobs of money and expertise and tallent and just go balls out down the dragstip running low nines all motor. The question is ALWAYS...how long will it live doing that? I fix cars for a living...I did...until back surgery happened...another story, I VERY COMMONLY will swap a motor or transmission on a used car with a junkyard motor. There is a little bit of skill to it but mostly only in WHO YOU BUY FROM. The yard I buy from it goes like this, "ring ring...blank auto? Oh...it's you...what do you need?" And then they acually buy the car I need the motor from off of an auction, sell me the motor pretty cheap and scavenge what else the can to other people like me. Like, after I call, they hang up and call four other people..."yea,I got this pos with no motor in it...low miles". and they sell the hell out of all that crap! I get a good releativly low mile LS for anywhere between 350 to 550 bucks. Sometimes it just depends on if if the guy feels like I owe him one for that last one...and who am I to complain right? And they live...a long time. Mostly because I tell em, :"don't beat on this thing, I don't know it's history...just that it seems to run great". So they baby it, drive it like a regular car and they live a long time. We used to do that will 440's back when they still were in running cars 25 30 years ago. We'd beat the hell out of em, bolt a bunch of crap to em see how fast they'd go. it was a challenge. Now you call the "block" people and the "crank" people and the "piston" people and that's not something you have the neighbor kid assemble for you...you've got big money into that.
  37. Chris Haley: Nice video! I completely understand what you are saying. One thing you did not mention was rod length to stroke ratio. That is so importrant. Very awesome info. You say motor and not engine. Motors are electric. Its all good I build many HP "Motors" We buiders know what you're talking about. Great Video!
  38. SpunLike ATop: I'm still trying to come across the poster saying they get Coyote motors for $400 😁
  39. Carlos P: Thanks for the info. Just got one misdiagnosed for $100 with everything. Hardness, ecu, etc. They told the guy that engine was knocking. A freind and i open the engine and found a lifter a little mess up. Everything else was incredibly in great shape. The engine has 80k miles!!!
  40. Roger Miller: Good luck trying to find a $400 ls engine in Oklahoma or even find one in the junkyard at all.
  41. James Holbrook: 800 hp on a stock rods and ring gap and from a stock cam is crazy
  42. Shane Grangrad: $400 ?? Not here in Australia . Try $4000 . If you can find one .
  43. Mounted Monsters Magazine: Got mine for $550 in Atlanta I can pull it at the junkyard for $100
  44. David Cook: 4clylinder vs v8, I personally it think both able to make the same HP, if built right
  45. Himithor: Nube here: what does LS stand for?
  46. Jesus Zuniga: a pony with a chevy engine 😂 ford people are cringing up the ass😂😂
  47. hungbeachbum: You know how to run your mouth...no engine building here.
  48. der Jack: Laberrhabarber
  49. Tommy Hallum: this guy puts 25 lb of boost on a stock truck engine valve train and he has the balls to say that the valve train wasn't very good. That valve train was designed to rev to maybe 4,200-5000 RPM on the daily. So why would you push 25 lb of boost through it while pushing it to 7000 RPM
  50. Stupid Fast: +Shane Whalley thanks! I actually just picked up a 2015 roller that im putting a built twin turbo ls in! Kinda curious as to how you went about making motor mounts since nobody makes them yet?? How did you align the block with the trans and rear? Did you put a trans in and get driveshaft angle figured out then level engine and square it up and make mounts based off of that? Any info helps man! Love the content
  51. FredTheFailLord: "we shut the rev limiter off, cuz, uh... I don't know why, Brian my crew chief said it was a really bad idea to do it but I told him to do it anyways" gold
  52. Shane Whalley: Who puts a LS in a mustang? Come on man! Lol love it!
  53. Shane Whalley: When it bent the push rods it cut out. And we did open the ring gap after we pulled the engine apart. We didn’t on the one event we ran the engine bone stock though.
  54. TeaJay: He meant it wasn’t very good when he was done
  55. Tim Hanson Services: Shouldnt u know the friggen cost of a crate ling block before naming your video is it worth it. Killer vid maybe " how long will a j/yard LS last over revved with 30lbs boost??
  56. ZeroBlackfire: I think Hoovie would have a few words on that. :D
  57. Ray Miller: If I built the bottom end of my ford 300 CID inline 6 300, what could I expect if I add a t3/t4 turbo? Will the stock Pre-OBD2 efi with larger injectors be able to cope with boost? It doesn't have a MAF but does have a map.
  58. Jazzmine Smith: Fucking talk to much
  59. Shane Whalley: Ehh, I was never one to care to much about slang. Motor, engine. Wheel, rim. Just don’t call a distributor a dizzy lol
  60. Wicked Moto: Shane Whalley fuck yea dude! What ever it takes to win. Esp if they’re junkyard motors and cheap to replace can’t go wrong. Any real racer will go full send on a blown motor to get that ET or win! Whatever works for you bud! At the end of the day if we all have fun that’s all that matters
  61. Ryan Robitaille: How much to just rebuild the bottom end of the 5.3l I have one n wondered
  62. Adam Weaver: The ls is known for the bottom end being amazingly strong. So your story about valve float doesnt surprise me. LS 3s are know for valve float too. But theres lots of parts and things to do to deal with that.
  63. Ricky Bailey: When it went it cut out hard !!! Then right after that valve flot is so smooth and crispy!! What he said back to back about the 5.3 motor!!! And 24 or 25 psi with no ring gap I've had the top of the pistons come apart at 14 psi with 12.0 A F R and not much timing not sure If he is just messing with people with this video!!
  64. mewrongway: YOTE KILLER!!
  65. jl: What twon you live in I need a ls1
  66. RangerVt 802: Junk its a chevy. Drive that mustang off a cliff with that shit motor
  67. Tim Martin: I know of a 5.0 sbf stock bottom end from factory with 30lbs of boost been racing for years.
  68. Robert Mottram: And the freight costs make up for it. I don't know about you but I at least prefer to be able to pull the plugs and try to turn the motor over before I buy a used motor. I know tons of guys who go to the track with a $2000.00 car and drop a 2 stage Nitrous kit in it for a lights out money run and if it blows up they hopefully make enough money on side bets to pay for another one... Disposable race cars.....
  69. teejay Solomon: Pull your own in vegas for less then 400..there are tons here
  70. raythemanroe: Pick A Part, the holy Grail of junk yards..lol
  71. Philip Patek: What about the iron block LQ’s? Aren’t those the same thing? Just with an iron block?
  72. DA9 McKinney: The things you say make my head hurt...
  73. jorge caraballo: I bought my 454 bbc for $175. From a guy who thought it was seized up when he pulled it from his boat! Put new crank/cam bearing, new lifters, pushrods, gaskets etc.... And this motor vibrated pictures off my walls when i started it up. Do your homework and put the time in. Build it yourself and be a real motorhead.
  74. James W. Barrett: the size of the hole in the block and the debris field will be bigger on the 11.5:1 engine
  75. Shane Whalley: You’re not wrong. Lol
  76. Ryan Cavanaugh: Lol...you probably detinated several pistons running a turbo and 11.5/1....I knew a guy who ran 11.5 without one and did it because he couldn't afford race gas daily...lol..but it..."was" loud.
  77. The Glamourous One: All dam day long here for $150 with computer!
  78. Shane Whalley: Personal opinion, not really, unless you’re doing it for ascetics in an oldschool car. The benefits of multi port fuel injection are far greater than carb setups.
  79. Charles Foster: I used to work at pick n pull, I've pulled several sub 120000 milers and sold em. Never had a complaint.
  80. James W. Barrett: Shane Whalley please elaborate on the difference between "static" and "effective" compression ratio's, and how you determine each. I'd much rather hear the explanation from you then Google or yahoo or some other version of 21st century empirical proof because you must be an engineer with all your overflowing knowledge of internal combustion theory, you've got my ear so please continue!. Thank You!
  81. kram Null: Did you leave the 11:5 to 1 compression with the turbo?
  82. Jaren Holleback: Because of all of the rock bouncers
  83. Mark A. Hampton: 5.7 cubic inch and a 5.3 cubic inch is 4 cubic shaved off all through the 80s 90s all it needed was 2 breathe ... throttle. body the bores are too small so It never peaked at performance it was on a leash..breathe and exhaust waist of money to set it up b.s.. it was embarrassing the rest of the others but Mercedes Benz.in Gasoline. its history paid its way .or No? 2000 take the 6 cycle set up off and. a power band will blow you into a new hobbie... make your hair stand up and smile.. GM. 5.7 far as Parts. everything was set spare..reset to build 5.3 and set up everything different why what was wrong with the 5.7 smaller and shorter or whatever whatever the 5.7 could dance all over it if it was
  84. William Dudley: Windsor is a base series for the 289, 302 and 351w, but you don't see Ford guys calling them all Windsors. The 5.3 (LM7, L59 LM4 and L33) are truck engines. When I hear LS I automatically think of a TA, Camaro or GTO.
  85. Jesus Zuniga: F -ound O-n R-oad D-ead
  86. Bryan Gadea: LS engines are partially made from Thor’s hammer
  87. TheHologr4m: Someone has more money than brains.
  88. Shane Whalley: It was on race fuel. Pistons and rings were fine. Even sent them back out to Diamond to be inspected and recoated. They were shipped back with 100% confirmation that they were fine. Cylinder bores were bored to thin for the aluminum block so it would get tons of blow by when it got hot because they would warp. Which we later confirmed after tearing the engine down and measuring the cylinder bore, and taper.
  89. Keith vance: I have a 2006 cadillac sts northstar i want to put a LS in it any suggestions
  90. Shane Whalley: So what about the L76 in the G8 that is basically identical to a LS2 except for the name and DOD? Is that not an LS even though it’s identical? It’s literally just names on different engines based off the LS platform.
  91. Ronald Everson: Hey fam what city r u in...I need u ??$$
  92. Earl Scaanlon: Ive always seen more videos on YouTube about Ls motors ...all kinds! Ford crap... What little i scroll across, i just scroll on by. Chevy for life. Ford people are wierd and need to wake up!
  93. Dustin Richardson: Slap in a 4.8 crank and rev it to 8700
  94. William Dudley: Damn Chevy guys 5.3's are not LS they are LM7's.
  95. Shane Whalley: That sucks man. Our local yard is $250 for any engine with accessories, and there are plenty of 4.8 5.3 and 6.0 trucks there.
  96. Donu Duty: You can find an old LS engine from the 70's that needs some machining on eBay for around $4-500 on a good day. There are lots of ways to make a strong street engine for cheap, it may not last long for racing but I don't race or use turbo's. Thank's for the advise..
  97. Darren McFeaters: Time IS money. Build it once right you dont have to pull junk yard motors. We all made big power on junk yards they just don't last.
  98. Shane Whalley: Car-part.com
  99. Miguel Marquez: How far into the desert do I have to travel in California to find a junkyard that hasnt been picked of LS engines from LA
  100. Joe Doole: These Junkyard LSx setups are amazing value. Stock bottom end can hold up to alot of power. My first was a 4.8 with 5.3 heads and LS9 cam, PTE 6766. Was my 10.50 bracket car for 2 years turned way down. Currently running an LQ9 6.0 with ported heads, TSP cam and valvetrain package, Gen 2 billet wheel 7675 and a 4L80 from RPM in an 88 Fox. Making insane power on a stock bottom and takes the abuse of racing it every week.
  101. Shaun Gill: talking so much shit
  102. Mike F: "If you throw a garrett turbo on a junkyard V8, y-you're not gonna regret it just don't rev it ta 8700 rpm or whatever the FUCK we did" lol
  103. Shane Whalley: It ran alright for a few years NA and on nitrous. The excessive overheating of hot laps under boost caused the cylinders to warp a bit. The thing still ran fine, just had a bunch of blowby when we would hot lap it. After we tore the block down cylinder 7 and 4 had excessive bore taper. But yeah, I’ll grenade a junkyard motor to finish an event if I have to lol
  104. david peirce: of course its worth it i get them for 250
  105. Randy Gibbs: He just really needs someone to talk to
  106. Shane Whalley: You can also find good deals on car-part.com from time to time.
  107. John boston 1974: Shane Whalley ok thank you for your response...
  108. asif afzal: 400 more like 4000
  109. Michael Dose: I live in So Cal. LS motors go for about 5k if they are of the 6.0 variety here for a complete pull out. At least one that is in good running condition. Buying the whole vehicle is the other route, but then you are talking 200k miles+ you might find one for 3k or less. You still have to deal with the rest of the vehicle. On ebay they start at 2500+. So the mythical cheap LS lives on.
  110. Shane Whalley: https://youtu.be/xECnd_r37QU Skip to about 10min. I basically used the factory mustang mount and the factory LS mount. Chopped them up and welded them todether. Then pulled the hack job mount off, built a jig for it and fabricated a proper mount.
  111. The Real Batman: I live at an RV park that also sits next to a huge pull part place. Complete engines for 350-400 bucks. You pay 2 bucks, bring your own tools, they provide engine hoist and wheelbarrow, you pull whatever engine you want. They have everything you can think of.
  112. DJScotty Maxx: 8700 or whatever the fuck we did😂🤣😂🤣😂this guy rocks lmfao
  113. Shane Whalley: They always are.
  114. Phoenix Martinez: I like Camaros and respect mustangs but fuck this video, he got a ls in this bitch 🤢🤮
  115. william pugh,III: i have told so many other this. i have that what every attitude but my brother knows what you said first person.
  116. Michael Dose: You lost me at you can find an LS for $400. You mean that one over there with the rod sticking through the side? If you're going to start out with complete BS you have no credibility with me.
  117. shaun Holcomb: Lol in Michigan u can pick them up at every junk yard for 500 and its usually 800 with a wiring harness
  118. Shane Whalley: It was more of a valve spring issue than a valve issue.
  119. the one: really - so you would slap in some stiffer ones and that thing would pull good to 8k - wonder if this has been done for fun to actually see - indeed changing the cam out would be ideal to take a higher rev better - im sure the ls would rip just fine
  120. Stupid Fast: AND HERES PART ONE SINCE YOU SAID STUPID FAST!!! LOL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SbPIaFHVdQ&t=118s
  121. TxJonathan: Paid 200 for a blown 5.3 with all accessories and ecu and 300 for for a long block from a coworker. Put them together and only spent 500. LS Engines are stupid cheap
  122. Old Fart: Whenever I replace an LS motor someone always stops in and offers more than the core charge for the old motor, it's happened on the last 3 I've done.
  123. Brrmycoochiscold: i have a 5.3 L33 junkyard high miler in my 87 S10 with a bw S475/83 turbo. Im living proof you cant kill these things if youre good with a wrench. This same motor pinned the needle on the temp gauge, seen a ton of nitrous, has 220+ km on it and still was an eligible and worthy candidate for the turbo. Check it out on my channel.
  124. mista ready: Thanks for this. Although i am trying to put a 2002 vortec in my 95 Tahoe 4x4 (4L60E) but the 02 electric tra sfercase and CPU have me worried
  125. Stupid Fast: +Shane Whalley thanks man! Definetely helpful!!!!
  126. steve beuchert: Just buy a 6.0 short block from Thompson motorsports for a little over $3000 people have made well over a 1000hp to the tire with those and they last
  127. Nic Hodgeman: Thats the average 400...with all accessories.......ahhh....no
  128. Shane Whalley: Car-part.com
  129. Shitstang_4sixx: +mewrongway Unlike the yote??? Dude you are literally a butthurt little redneck. I can sense it. The coyote is proven a better motor. Its fact. Makes more hp per liter, forged from factory, holds 900whp+ reliably with a good tune and fuel system and it revs to 7.5k. So please shut your dumbass up.
  130. Shane Whalley: I do a lot of late model Chrysler heim stuff at work. Pretty good engines, a cam kit with lifters, springs, and push rods will net a noticeable gain. Usually end up doing superchargers and e85 fuel systems on them to get up in the 700-800whp range.
  131. irench: if you have to ask.
  132. irench: You boosted an 11.5-1 motor.
  133. Jacob Deem: Ditch the bonnet dude. You look like a 12 year old with a 5 o clock shadow. I dig the story tho.
  134. h20 delirious fan: I clicked off this video because he talked to much
  135. John Shit: Stand still please quit walk in circles your making every one dizzy
  136. omaduskilas: Interesting vid... turbo or supercharger what to do. I have an LS3 and thinking of installing a supercharger over turbo thinking it’s more reliable. Would supercharger be more reliable than turbo? Does turbo take away the V8 sound from exhaust?
  137. teejay Solomon: Im gonna do this to my 91 camaro drop top..no rurbo..just heads, cam, intake, good exhaust..appreciate the info
  138. Danny Austin: What size garret turbo? Looking for 750-900 to the tire.
  139. H: I didn't understand anything he said. How did I get here?
  140. Motero1249 P: Say it! Chevy ls!! Whoa!!
  141. Shane Whalley: Factory valve springs and push rods are not worth much over stock. As for the actual castings, we did over 800whp on stock casting heads unported, stock valves, with dual coil valve springs, and push rods.
  142. Bruce M: Shit, there a 100 bux here in Buffalo. Top to bottom including ecu! U just have to yank it out!
  143. scott left: Own unnessesary questions answed...forget all but basic needs.
  144. Tom Laz: I paid 200 for mine wiring harness ecm
  145. Casey Schaening: $400 for a 5.3 XD my friend just gave me his old 5.3 ls for free XD does that mean i got the cheapest 5.3 ls?
  146. blueduster74: Worth it as long as you aren’t stupid. After 600hp they are time bombs.
  147. Randy VanMeter: 4.8 5.3 go from $350-$550 depending on unit...6.0s average $1000 -$1500 depending on unit..Thats just here in the midwest. There are alot of different 5.3s and 6.0 with different heads ect Some make better power,Some are stronger... Before you go yank any motor study the differences and get the most for your $$$.
  148. Breaking Reality: Some reason I feel this guy is full of shit
  149. Certified Auto Care Recovery: I want to put a 5.3 into a 1976 Cutlass 442 i need some help with a harness
  150. TheUnbeen: Answer at 9:04
  151. Jadesa0420: Carb is better NA than fuel injection. More power all the way across the board. Don't believe me? Engine masters (motor trend on demand(it's free now to watch with ads).) just did a dyno pull with fuel rails, then put on a carb. A 750 holley double pumper and a 1050 holley carb. More power all the way around when your carb is tuned correctly.
  152. Darkpassenger2012: Ls engine love to eat boost as long as you manage the compression. This being a 5.3 you don't have to worry as much.
  153. Gordon Fuller: I have a school bus with a 454 What can I do to get stronger pulling power, and not kill it. It is a 1985
  154. James W: I paid $125 for a 115,xxx 5.7. only good thing about Oklahoma 😂😂
  155. jamell osgood: I called push rods before you said it. Lol
  156. Shane Whalley: Garrett G42-1200 would be perfect for that.
  157. Marlon Ostil: Fuck yes!!!
  158. John boston 1974: Got a question for you I have a 6.2 and I wanna go lsa blower what are your thoughts I dont wanna pay all that money for turbo and I still want a daily driver in my Chevrolet short wheelbase truck
  159. MyOneBlack Friend: Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. This is something I would like to do.
  160. Wicked Moto: Bored it too big caused it to blow? your p2w clearance must have been pretty excessive for that to happen lol i also love how you said i'm an engine builder i know all the aspects but revved a completely stock junkyard 5.3 to 8700 and bent all the pushrods. that made me lol. thanks for the laugh, sweet car and builds man. have a great day!
  161. Chevy Sargent: Junkyard by my house sells engines for $100 with a $50 core as long as you pull it
  162. Shayne Williams: You must of built thAt engine shit lol a ls1 makes 300 hp alldAy everyday so um yrh how you got 280 with turbo u must be one shit engine builder mate i bought stock ls1 put twin baby turbos on it made 600 hp so u need to lern how to build engine wen uou bacwards in hp you fucked up .
  163. Shane Whalley: My coworker just found one today fully dressed with accessories, ecu, and harness for $450 usd. Well worth it. 👍
  164. drtb69: Depends on miles and compression test, color of oil, etc.. 400... hell yeah!! if it has good.compresison, clean looking oil and good compression!
  165. Matthew Skaggs: As someone looking at building a budget sleeper this video was very helpful. Im a ford guy so trying to learn as much as I can about these LS motors
  166. Shane Whalley: Stock #AB7088
  167. the one: velve float - velve rev - what are velves LOL - never heard it said that way - - i got 5 angle velve job and stronger velve springs - how much boost can velves take ?
  168. Shane Whalley: If its at a pull it yourself junkyard, I’ll usually pop a valve cover off, maybe take off the valley cover just to get a look down in the engine. But you can’t really comp test them out in the yard. That being said the pull it yourself yard I goto is only $200 for any engine, so even if it’s got some issues it’s still worth it in parts.
  169. John H: Where are you finding 5.3s for 400 dollars? They are anywhere from 1200-1500 from the local salvage yards. Now thats not pulling it yourself, so maybe thats where the higher price is coming from.
  170. Shane Whalley: Hey man, sometime you just gotta send it and let it eat. An engine is a small price to pay when you consider the cost of running an entire event. Blow up engine and get points on the board for the series, or spend all the money going to the event to give up? Easy choice in my opinion.
  171. Stupid Fast: ID SAY THEYRE WORTH IT!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crf-BnWKKQQ
  172. M. Garza: Here is a question for all you guys with ls experience.. Is it worth getting an ls and put carb and intake kit? I'm old schol and would like to do that.. Thanks in advanced
  173. Shane Whalley: Car-part.com
  174. mewrongway: Why Not? Whats the diff between a 9:1 and 20lb boost and 11.5:1 and 12lb boost?
  175. youngestson 65: Way too high of a compression ratio for a turbo set up??????🤔
  176. Hector Ortega: Chebys Bucket of Excuses.
  177. Greg Ras: I got a crate for 3,699.00 for my gxp
  178. Shane Whalley: Car-part.com
  179. Kyle Dupont: Yeah I mean if you want to build super crazy Performance Racing stuff then you need a lot of money and new parts and forged internals and all that but I would personally find a lot more fun on my budget to just get a worn-out ass motor and overboost the s*** out of it because you can still make a hell of a lot of power that way and a fraction of the cost
  180. Colby Thornton: A camshaft swap would be the most practical way. A RV cam as they are called, should get you what your looking for. And shouldn't drain your bank account.
  181. narutouzimaki111 narutouzimaki111: Thanks man I plan on getting a GTO and I was debating if I should go with the 04 ls1 5.7 or the 05 06 6.0 ls2 🤔people been telling me the cast iron block has a better bottom end so I was gonna purchase one and bore it out 2 what ever🙃
  182. Christian Atheist: Junk yard builders bragging how much power they made while destroying an engine. I wonder why mainstream racers never caught on...........
  183. Shane Whalley: Detroit
  184. marshall mcdowell: LS engines in Alabama start around 800 bucks
  185. Jeff Adamczak: What do you think of them short block 5.7 hemi? Yeah all cast iron short block... what are some cheap tricks for more torque and hp?
  186. Stephen Carr: Come to Pittsburgh pa...see them every day
  187. william pugh,III: some times you lose horse power in the spool. ;just has in the evo! or lancer seriouly. i have never done the wrenching my self. but motor trend weekly. is my favorite.
  188. William Dudley: Honestly the G8 never came to mind. I figured it was packing the same exact set up as the GTO since it basically replaced the GTO.
  189. Jesus Mendoza: In Houston they're 450 all day long..
  190. david peirce: aluminium blocks are trash
  191. Ra L: ....400. $$$ u pick. um. motor. No. Way .Jo'"se.... !!!....
  192. Shane Whalley: $300 Directly from Car-part.com Literally took me 30 seconds to find one. Sports & Imports Auto Parts USA-MI(Warren) Request_Quote 586-619-9090 Request_Insurance_Quote
  193. Morte Parla: 600hp is about the furthest you would want to go with a 5.3 being daily-driver levels of reliable.
  194. konard konrado: just tell me where do you lvie coz ls for 400 is jsut a miracle where i live....
  195. Talredhedkid: Answer is at 9:05
  196. Shane Whalley: You can find them all over the place out here for $400 or less. I bought the one in my car for $400 complete with accessories, ecu, and harness. Just gotta look in the right places.
  197. Benjamin Vandiver: Im in Indiana and I got a 99 5.3l truck motor for $225 with 150××× on it.
  198. Rob&Lani S: Cool video thx for posting
  199. MrDutchman97: I'm in Canada and got my junkyard 5.3 for $450(CAD) harness and ecu included
  200. Louis-Philippe Lavoie: Nothing in this world is worth it. All is vanity.Wathever your doing, STOP NOW
  201. mrhazel: I'd rather go through ATK and get a 5.3/5.7 LM7 stroker short block for 2900.00 and buy the top end with a cam from Texas speed Can't go wrong there...
  202. anthony grace: i paid $100 for my 5.3 long b lock
  203. Chris Groff: $400 Fake News !
  204. Stephen Carr: Stock bottom end is good to around 1000 hp. Top end about 800
  205. Gerald Wagster: You can get a 5.3 LS engine out of a wreck for around $750 in Tennessee. Complete.
  206. Angel Ayala: If this dude can find me a running ls1 for 400 dollars I'll start driving over to wherever he is right now
  207. stubbsandson: How much a turbo kit cost
  208. Vincent Bailey: Hey shutting off that rev limiter is a REALLLLY BAD idea..... "DO IT ANYWAYS." LOL
  209. Purusha Onezeroeight: Thanks. Thanks. Awesome. Really really enjoyed the video. Info and delivery. Supet
  210. Wayne Mckenzie: thanks mate very interesting,,but you lost me when you said 53 engine, i have a 5.7 ls1,,350 chev in a vy r8 maloo
  211. Heebee Jeebeez: Keep the vids going, making good power gains reliably on the cheap is what’s up
  212. Nate Rist: the junkyard is where most LS swaps start and when the engine they pulled blows they just go get another one. This is nothing new
  213. Russell Booth: Mine is a 5.7 litre Chevy LS1 engine which I pulled apart at 337,512 kilometres to fix the clattering noise in it when it was warmed up,it made a metallic noise. I checked the engines compression & oil pressure which was o.k.,so I decided it was bad lifters & maybe a camshaft, so a new set of lifters cost me $100 AUD & a used camshaft cost me $35 AUD. I just found that all the lifters were a bit mushroomed but the camshaft was still o.k.,so I threw a new set of lifters in & a new timing chain & sprocket set to replace the worn out set. So,it cost me about $1000 AUD to fix it including new gaskets, seals ,radiator, coolant, oil, filter, etc, etc. The cylinders were basically still like new with the factory hone marks,I couldn't feel the ridge with my finger nail, the valves still sealed off as well. The engine runs like new now with over 338,600 kilometres on the odometer. So is a junkyard engine worth it ? Well, yes it is providing that the cylinder compression & oil pressure is still good ! The iron blocks are probably better for turbocharged applications & can probably be bored out further,my LS1 has an aluminium block with steel sleeves in them which have a factory limit of 0.010" oversize, there are 0.020" oversized pistons available which would be the furthest I'd go when turbocharging, there are 0.040" oversized pistons available but I wouldn't use them in forced induction applications. I know companies such as Nissan have gone to spray welding technology to coat the aluminium bores with iron, there's no chance of GM ever using it as the patent is owned by Ford. It's similar to the Nikasil technology as used in motorbike engines.
  214. james pond: Does a bunch of stuff his mechanic told him not to do, calls the engine "not that great" when things go south. Seems legit.
  215. satt1313: How can you over bore a motor? If you blew that motor up it was likely because of turbocharging a motor with 11 1/2 :1 and improper ring gap. You might get away with boosting a 11.0:1 if your running alcohol or at least E85. Detonation is the problem.
  216. Shane Whalley: Well I build all my own stuff, so a full kit usually runs me around $600 in material and parts to build not including the turbo and wastegates. But it also takes about 20-40 hours to build depending on how I design the kit.
  217. Miguel Marquez: Thank you!
  218. SEDRICK WELLS: Awesome vid. If ever some one was on the fence about getting a junkyard LS this video will help in their decision
  219. Jeff Hensley: The piston must be made from gold in Tennessee. They want a arm and leg for a long block. Maybe a toe or two from the other.
  220. Christian Wood: Do you still have this engine Ben?
  221. Irineo Velasquez: If your gonna use boost, use a 4.8L, it has the right internals to do something like that. Not a 5.3. Use bronze solid trunnions on the rocker arms, and change the cam for what your gonna use the motor for. Every thing else comes natural. Depends on how creative you can go. So yes junk yard LS are worth it. Just get a good core, don't be lazy to check it out. Drop the pan, check the bearings on the connecting rod, ect.
